Switch Desktop computer to "laptop" mode (Draft)

  1. Need to know or have user do ahead of time
    1. computer name - right-click on This PC and select Properties...full computer name should be in the middle
    2. users directoryid
    3. for VPN connections, users will need to know their computer (MOO) and UMD passwords and have DUO access
    4. users will lose access to the server so discuss options for copying files ahead of time, moving them to google drive, or copy to a USB drive.  Or see other directions/options to access files from the server manually using Remote Access/Remote Gateway (without tying up the VPN).  Particular important to NM Advisors and Admin that use QB.  And those that use group folders.
  2. Access Active Directory
    1. Find the desktop computer
      1. Right click on the computer name and click Move, Move to Laptops
      2. Update membership and add locationname-laptops and laptop-computers
    2. Find the username
      1. update membership and add laptop-user
  3. Use Logmein and connect to the users computer for a remote session
  4. Connect to vpn.moo.umd.edu (directoryid, UMD password, push (or enter pin from token)
    1. Open a command window and enter gpupdate /force (this updates the group membership settings on the computer)
    2. Use this VPN connection to do any last minute copying of files.... (in particular, I copied the desktop files from the server to a local folder on the C: drive to get a copy of the icons used).  But don't copy GB of data this way.
  5. Update registry to default settings for file locations: https://www.winhelponline.com/blog/windows-10-shell-folders-paths-defaults-restore/
    1. w10_usf_defaults_hkcu.zip
    2. Download and run this file to the users computer... or download to your computer and use logmein copy file feature to move it to the users downloads folder.  This file will update the registry pointers to default settings instead of server locations.
  6. Reboot computer and reconnect via Logmein
  7. Test out Office Programs and any other special programs.  I had an issue with Numan program on one of the advisors computer and she may need to install it again as it was still looking for server location.   Or this program may require manual modification to the registry.
